Panorama

Fragmented
The great historical narratives have often ignored the fact that chronological life stories are a perfectionist illusion: paths are too convoluted, decisions too unpredictable, coincidences too unexpected, wars too sudden or love too disarming. Once we start to perceive the realities of life as fragments, individual destinies become visible and stages of life become facets of a lifetime. These ruptures in life have spawned forms of cinematic storytelling in contemporary documentary cinema. Progressive narratives are opened up through associative images, flickering memories and fragmented observations of the long term. A family album, dissected into its individual parts, meanders back from France to Palestine. In Seoul, the poetic quality of abandoned buildings awakens the history of the country’s colonisation. A tender look back in old age reveals that life does not progress in linear fashion. The films in this year’s Panorama are on search missions, centring around the question of how the cinematic image can become a framework for new perspectives in a time marked by social challenges.
