Together

There is a sense of longing that pervades our society: we are losing our connection to one another and everything around us. The films in the Panorama section knit together what is fraying, remind us of what is in danger of being forgotten, and offer courage where community seems remote: we weave threads through archives, learn to connect with our own gardens. We choose to stage a sex strike and, in doing so, find ourselves close to other women. We fall in love all over again, entirely by chance, and transcend boundaries on the Atlantic. We look to women who carry revolutions, because change is only possible together. So being connected becomes, in a sense, the possibility of a new experience of the world. Where we feel powerless in times of ongoing crises, connection with a passion, another body or a melody can restore our sense of self through a sense of belonging to a greater whole. Cinema – itself built upon the connection between images – strikingly shows us this year how it can be a medium of empathy.
