Formfragen: Fia Fabula
Alice Dalgalarrondo
A red thread stretches between the fingers of our protagonists, reminding us of the myth of Ariadne. In this sensuous and visually striking experimental film, Alice Dalgalarrondo weaves together the stories of six female characters. In doing so, she offers a guide to engaging with feminist storytelling. The narrators’ knowledge unfolds in a disparate and hence non-linear manner. Alongside this, sensual material: music, analogue film strips and looms from Brazil. A craft tradition that reflects the knowledge stored in women’s bodies, and at the same time an artistic devotion that is not written down anywhere. The pioneers guide us to the boundaries of the stories: memories are recalled in tunnels, and a different perspective is adopted through telescopes. Whilst we listen to an evocative voice retelling the story of Eve and Adam’s paradise, we hear it and yet listen in a different way. A dazzling display of cinematic design and costume that grants us access to a distinct artistic world. And in the midst of all this: graphic animations of dissolution, like rivers of memories meant to slip away from us. So let’s observe as old knowledge slips away and new knowledge emerges, deeply touching our imagination and, with it, our identification with female pioneers. We are left with lasting inspiration and ideas drawn from multidirectional knowledge: a modern feminist cinematic language is born.

World Premiere
Fia Fabula is part of Formfragen, a programme within the documentary film section that challenges the traditional cinema experience with new formats. We recommend attending the panel discussion Dream without a job? How do we become feminist film curators? and Alice Dalgalarrondo’s artistic intervention right before the film screening.
