The Film All-Nighter

Day in, day out, we are confronted with reports from the press or politicians about assassinations, scares and disasters – the »usual madness«, so to speak. But if we are to maintain an overview of the situation, we need to contain this information overkill by means of regulation and systematisation. However, in that process, equally exaggerated forms of classification lunacy and self-optimisation mania can emerge – all ably shown by the many and varied short films that the festival proudly presents in its Film All-Nighter 2011. The compilation echoes the WHAT NOW festival theme in a frequently humorous way that also gives food for thought.
Attentate bundles the seemingly arbitrary murders of public figures into an associative exemplary collage while Quest’estate le zanzare sarrano più cattive (This Summer Mosquitos Will Be Worst Than Ever) holds a sensation-seeking press directly responsible for sowing the seeds of anxiety in us all. The spectrum of contributions here ranges from realistic tips on how to optimise time- and self-management in Time’s Up to the do-ityourself measures in Deval Kit on how to effect a »reverse gentrification« that runs down a part of town – and make it attractive again to people on a tight budget (and less attractive to the fat cats) – through to the problems of a young woman losing her way in an accelerated world in Dissonance. Films which, on the one hand, are committed to showing alternative ways of living together and which, on the other hand, like to ridicule our attempts to categorise, demarcate and even press fairy-tale characters into a system (Real Snow White). Three of the films are summarised elsewhere: Abwertungskit (Deval Kit) in the Urban Landscapes programme section; and Roma Boys and Nr. 1 – Aus Berichten der Wach- und Patrouillendienste in the If You Don‘t Fight Back part of the programme. This year‘s Film All-Nighter kicks off with a very special highlight: Ariel Schrag will be reading extracts from her graphic novel Potential.
