Diario de Mi Sextorsión
My Sextortion Diary
Patricia Franquesa
A message from a friend leaves Pati in shock. After her laptop is stolen, a hacker sends nude photos of her to contacts in her address book. The hacker confronts Pati directly, demanding money in exchange for not distributing the images more widely. In a state of mental turmoil, Pati retreats behind her screen, only to discover that thousands of other people around the world have fallen victim to sextortion – threatened with the publication of their most intimate photos. With indifferent and inefficient authorities offering no help, Pati realises she has to find her own way out of this nightmare. In a desperate yet bold act of self-empowerment, she overcomes her shame and decides to share the images on her social networks, stripping the blackmailer of his power. Produced for the most part as a desktop film with a fragmented, collage-like aesthetic, the video diary documents Pati’s search for clues and options, while turning her audience into voyeurs of her digital journey. This deeply personal film confronts the realities of digital violence and the emotional, social and legal challenges victims face.
