Obviously, She’s Looking for Someone

Obviously, She’s Looking for Someone

Susanne Dilger (Artist)

They suddenly appear out of the blue, in the middle of the city, in department store doorways, at traffic lights, in pedestrian zones. They stand, lie, crouch: foreign bodies, unshapely creatures in tightfitting cocoons of knitted patchwork. The patchwork structure of the cocoons consists of familiar, almost homely fragments – horizontal stripes, Norwegian patterns, rib-knit, cuffs and even traditional polo necks can be seen. And yet the figures could not be more alien. Like extra-terrestrials sent to Earth on mysterious missions, frozen in time, petrified. Or are they? Wasn’t that a slight waver? Didn’t that chest rise? Didn’t that forearm tremble?

Obviously, She’s Looking for Someone connects a number of key elements from the work of Marburg artist Susanne Dilger: direct confrontation with the audience, use of unusual forms and objects, and wool as her material of choice. With her intervention into urbans space during IFFF Dortmund+Köln, Dilger raises questions and subtly challenges passers-by. Is it permissible to linger with the figures, to watch them, examine them? Or do we quickly ignore the disturbance and continue on our way? (JF)
