Mexico is a country firmly in the grip of patriarchal violence. With around ten femicides every day, women in this Central American country face massive danger, while the number of people missing is nearly one hundred thousand. A macho culture, corruption and male power politics also pervade the work of the police and judiciary, resulting in only about five percent of cases actually being solved. Mar Maremoto, a young illustrator from Mexico City, engages in an unflagging, day-to-day feminist campaign with her drawings. Her graphic illustrations, which she shares on social media, express her anger, evoke a safe, egalitarian future and are a channel for her activist energy. The deeply grateful and galvanising reactions she receives from people on the street and online show just how powerful art can be. Affected women talk openly, share their stories, process their experiences, forge bonds and encourage each other. Draw for Change – We are Fire accompanies Mar Maremoto to demonstrations, squats and self-defence courses. The encounters with survivors and relatives of victims are profoundly moving. The film successfully confronts the unbearable in a way that allows it to be understood and dealt with in a positive way, partly through a flowing combination of documentary material and Mars’ animated graphics. Mars’ hope for a better future, and her willingness to fight for it, is extremely strong: »I am a seed trying to sprout in forbidden ground. Drawing is my battlefield.«
