»I drew on my own experiences, but I also did a lot of research. Of course it was important for the film that I had been ill myself. I think I can present the subject more truthfully and show how ugly this illness is. It’s not at all glamorous, which is the impression you sometimes get from what the gossip magazines write about celebrities with eating disorders. It’s about real existential fear, life and death, and it affects everyone around you, not just the person who’s ill.«
– Sanna Lenken, Serien Ninja, 16 February 2015

Katja’s eating disorder is becoming life-threatening. But at first her family doesn’t take the illness seriously. Only 12-year-old Stella begins to realise that something’s not right with her sister. Katja and Stella usually get on well, even if everything at home revolves around the older sister and her talent as a figure skater, and there’s little room for the younger sister Stella. But Katja is suddenly aloof and mean to Stella. The fact that she falls for their ice-skating instructor who is four times older than her and only has eyes for her older sister doesn’t make things any easier. When Stella realises Katja has a serious problem, she wants to talk to her parents about it – but Katja reacts with threats. Soon Katja’s condition becomes alarming and the younger sister’s responsibility too great.
Told from Stella’s perspective, Sanna Lenken produces a sensitive study of the two sisters’ relationship and shows authentically and clearly how the illness can impact the entire family. My Skinny Sister is Sanna Lenken’s second film on the subject of eating disorders after her award-winning short film Eating Lunch (2013).
