Gardiennes de nuit
Night Watchers
Nina Khada
Nora travels from France to Algeria to bring her late grandmother home for burial – only to find that tradition dictates the funeral is a matter for men only. Left alone in the house with her grief and her anger, she eventually decides it’s time to break the rules. Shot in warm colours and carried by a quiet, measured tone, the film reflects the conflicting emotions of a young woman caught between family expectations and the need to assert herself – and it speaks of the value of female solidarity in a patriarchal world.
