Panorama

Panorama

The theme of being forced to start over and move from one place to another runs through the Panorama section’s documentary films. The main figures find different ways of coping with where they end up. They catalogue memories and testimonies of their previous lives on cassettes, explore their past through home movies, or find solace in mythical literature. At the same time, they discover their new surroundings via smartphones, analyse traces of the past through historical sources, reinterpret them and overwrite them with their own meanings. In one way or another, in some cases quietly and in others loudly, they offer resistance in adverse circumstances. But playing a role in all cases are practices of remembering which find traces of the past in the present.

The diversity of the methods used by the protagonists to recall the past is also mirrored in the cinematic approaches to depicting and narrating them. Sometimes observational, sometimes participatory, sometimes poetic, sometimes reflective, the selected documentaries take a close look at individual and collective memories. They are representative of a variety of documentary narratives ranging from direct cinema to essay film through to smartphone video, and the dynamic relationship between film-makers and those filmed unfolds in the most diverse ways.
