Eight-year-old Nelly has just lost her grandmother, and is helping her parents clearing out her mother’s childhood home. She explores the house and surrounding woods where her mother, Marion, used to play and where she built the tree house Nelly has heard so much about. After only a short while though, her mother suddenly leaves unannounced. Soon afterwards Nelly meets a girl of her own age in the woods, building a tree house. Her name is Marion.
Céline Sciamma’s fifth film is another example of her great artistry. Via regular collaborator Claire Mathon’s deft cinematography, Sciamma only needs a few shots to set the scene and tone of the film. Her »time-travel film without a time machine« (Sciamma) is a fairy-tale reverie triggered by the twin mysteries of memory and the future. In just shy of 72 minutes, she uses the power of imagination and scant dialogue to examine bygone feelings of friendship, the transition to adulthood, loneliness, longing, mourning and love, which are carried on through generations. The empty gaps in the film leave room for interpretation and fully engage the audience. Ultimately, every viewer ends up seeing a different film.
Petite Maman is entered for the International Feature Film Competition and will receive a jury rating. Due to licensing rights, the film is unfortunately not available for streaming. The film is due for release in German cinemas in autumn 2021. We will then present the film in a preview together with the distributor.
