The audience award was also presented at the festive awards ceremony on Sunday evening at Filmforum NRW. At the 39th edition of the festival, viewers were able to choose the film that moved them the most from a selection of 23 films. All films from the programme with a running time of 60 minutes or more and no more than two years old were eligible.

In the audience’s favor was Nico by Eline Gehring, which was shown in the section »begehrt! filmlust & queer«. The feature film portrays geriatric nurse Nico (Sara Fazilat), who after a racist attack decides to train karate and never be a victim again. Actress Javeh Asefdjah personally accepted the €1000 prize in Cologne, which was sponsored by the magazine choices and presented by film critic Christian Meyer-Pröpstl.
