Wintertochter

Wintertochter

Johannes Schmid

»With his second feature film, director Johannes Schmid has come up with more than a children’s film. It’s a road movie set against an impressive winter landscape that combines adventure with thoughtfulness and it will appeal to adults and younger views alike.«

The 12 y.o. Kattaka is looking forward to Christmas Eve. The only thing that she and her parents still need is a fir tree and they proceed to cut one down – this in the company of Knäcke, Kattaka’s best friend, and Lene, a somewhat crotchety 75 y.o. neighbour. Let Christmas come! But things turn out completely different when, in the middle of exchanging the presents, Kattaka learns to her utter astonishment that the man she had hitherto considered Papa is not her natural father. Fuming with anger, determined that nothing will get in her way, she and Knäcke and Lene set off for Poland where her father is working on a ship as a sailor. What unfolds is a truly exciting road trip that becomes a journey into the past for both Kattaka and Lene.
Wintertochter (Winter’s Daughter) combines fantastic cinema pictures with a committed story about the search for one’s roots. The film is also about a friendship that spans countries and  generations and it touches on recent German-Polish history.
