Over-the-top feminist comedy: At the theatre, rehearsals are taking place for Lysistrata, Aristophanes’ ancient Greek play. Lysistrata incites the
women to go on a sex strike until the men stop their war, which is destroying everything. Three of the actors, Liz, Marianne and Gunilla, find in their characters disturbing echoes of their own lives. How can women regain control of their life and at the same time make the world a better place? It is time to get the message across to the apathetic public. But is society ready for a wake-up call? It may come as no surprise that Simone de Beauvoir called Mai Zetterling’s riotous film »the best movie ever made by a woman«.

Mai Zetterling

A leading figure in Swedish cinema, Mai Zetterling (1925–1994) was an international stage and screen actress. In 1960, she turned to directing for television (BBC) and cinema, working from her own scripts, while writing several novels. Her films (Loving Couples 1964 and Night Games 1966) caused a scandal with their themes and the new form of writing she developed. Although internationally acclaimed, Flickorna was slammed by Swedish – predominantly male – critics. Zetterling continued to make feature films and documentaries, but in England and the US. It was not until 18 years later that she returned to Sweden to direct Amorosa.
