In Sie ist der andere Blick (She Is the Other Gaze), Christiana Perschon teams up with five female artists who have been part of the Viennese art scene since the 1970s. Long 16mm sequences in the first part of the film, during which white canvases are primed, open up a space of possibilities: The resonating space for the dialogue with Renate Bertlmann, Linda Christanell, Lore Heuermann, Karin Mack and Margot Pilz is the director’s studio. In this relaxed and intimate interaction between two generations, the formal approach is open. Each artist must find a form for her portrayal that does justice to her and her art. Ranging between matter-of-fact and indignant, the women artists, born between 1936 and 1943, tell of the early days in their careers, which they had to fight through in the face of the massive institutional sexism of the 1960s and 1970s. »There were galleries that would say: Exhibiting one woman once a year is enough.« The experiencing and overcoming of humiliating paternalism unites the women. The film is carried by the strength, passion and resilience of its main characters. With calmness and an emphasis on accomplicity, the production gives them time to explain themselves, and the audience room to let what has been said sink in. In this way, the film pays tribute to the feminist awakenings and achievements of the portrayed women.
