Salome (Francesca Bertini) enchants the guests attending the birthday party of her stepfather Herodes with a veil dance. In return, she demands the head of the imprisoned John the Baptist. Her bloody reward is handed to her on a tray. A phalanx of extras in exotic and exquisite costumes is orchestrated around the diva against elaborately designed backdrops featuring tall stone buildings and palm trees. (BS)

Francesca Bertini (Artist)

Francesca Bertini was an Italian film actress and was considered the diva of the Italian silent film era. Her collaboration with Ugo Falena for the Film d’Arte Italiana company laid the groundwork for her career, which culminated in her numerous leading roles of the late 1910s (La maestrina, Assunta Spina). Subsequently, she gradually withdrew from the film business. In 1976, Bernardo Bertolucci convinced her to accept the role of Sister Desolata in his epic film 1900.
