In the backyard of a squatters’ house in Erfurt in the summer of 1989, when it was still not clear whether the dictatorship would fall that autumn, I carried out a painting action using a standing mirror. The film serves as a visual declaration of war against the system that was intent on putting me in a psychiatric hospital or prison because I continued to express myself individually and artistically to the public.
Gabriele Stötzer
Gabriele Stötzer was expelled from university for political reasons and sentenced to one year in prison. In 1980, she took over the private Galerie im Flur and organised plein airs, which were liquidated by the state security service. From 1982, she published articles in underground magazines in the GDR, took photo, made Super 8 films and produced woven objects. Since 1984, she has participated in exhibitions of fashion objects and performances with the artist group Exterra XX. In 1989, she helped initiate the first occupation of the Stasi’s headquarters in the GDR together with four other women. She has written nine books since1989, including Der lange Arm der Stasi, which was published in 2022.
