Dortmund Scharnhorst in the late 1970s: the neighbourhood has an exceptionally high number of residents relying on social support, many of them single mothers. Confronted with bureaucratic hurdles and isolation, they turn to self-help and solidarity, forming a women’s group and refusing to be pushed around by social services. Their empowerment is tangible and immediate: »Until now, I always thought this was my personal misfortune. But that’s not true – other women are going through exactly the same thing.«
