A Video Letter to Barbara Hammer
Joey Carducci
In 1995, Barbara Hammer released her filmic autobiography Tender Fictions. She deconstructs the genre and keeps her version fragmentary and multi-layered, positioning herself as a lesbian film-maker. Joey Carducci collaborated with her on the film Generations. In this film he composes his own autobiographical account of her outtakes. A coming-out film that directly addresses Hammer and continues with his own version. – Natascha Frankenberg

In his work, Joey Carducci exposes the process of film-making to create awareness and resistance in form and content. Although 16-mm film is his chosen medium, he admits that his activism is conducted primarily on his smartphone, as featured in his project Civil Imagination in Practice: Copwatching as an Oppositional Gaze. He is developing his trans-experimental film theory as part of his master’s thesis in the Pratt Institute’s graduate programme in media studies.
