Kids and Young Adults Programme
We are delighted to be able to present children and young film fans in Dortmund and Cologne with a selection of films specially curated for young audiences. Feature films, documentaries and animated films from different parts of the world cater to all age groups. All screenings are accompanied by an experienced film mediator and in some cases followed by discussions with the film-makers.
Every year our Festival welcomes around 1,000 children to our programme for children and young people. The goal of this section is to inspire young people, with their many and varied media experiences and skills, to get interested in the medium of film and to introduce them to the cinema as an aesthetic and social experiential space. Thanks to a dedicated committee of teachers who view the films in advance, programmes are created that are both high quality and suitable for classroom teaching. This concrete link to Dortmund schools makes our programme one of the most successful initiatives of IFFF Dortmund+Köln.
The contact person for advice on individual programs for daycare groups and school classes is Thomas Hartmann, Hartmann@frauenfilmfest.com
The film programme for children and young people is the only Festival section running simultaneously in both Cologne and Dortmund.

Kids and Young Adults Programme
A media educator and cultural specialist, Thomas has been passionate about quality media for children for many years. He is an ardent advocate of media content that is produced to inspire children, that opens up new horizons for them and that dares to explore new territory. Driven by this philosophy, he works in many media sectors and for a wide range of institutions. For seven years he headed the German Youth Film Award and the Bundes.Festival.Film. event at the Deutsches Kinder- und Jugendfilmzentrum (German Children’s and Youth Film Centre). He previously worked as an author and editorial assistant for WDR children’s radio. In his blog, “Mama lauter!”, he promotes children’s music. His podcast “Wieso? Weshalb? Warum?”, roughly translatable as “Why? How? What for?”, aims to stimulate his listeners’ interest in children’s media offerings away from the mainstream. And Thomas is putting the same energy and commitment into organising the Programme for Kids and Young Adults for next year’s 40th IFFF Dortmund+Köln.
»Inspiring the oft-mentioned ›audience of tomorrow‹ means you have to take them seriously today, and offer them something of substance. That’s exactly what IFFF Dortmund+Köln does with its Programme for Kids and Young Adults. I’m really happy to play a part in putting it together!«
