To manage and cost a film project as efficiently as possible, it advisable to start thinking about the post-production process at an early stage. This is much easier if the people involved – whether film director, documentary film-maker, assistant director or production manager – are fully aware of what structures and procedures are in place after the filming process has been completed.

In this seminar, Anne Urban will be opening the post-production box of tricks and explaining what it means exactly for the film as a whole. Moreover, she will be looking at details relating to logistics and basic digital processing structures. What does happen in the film laboratory after cutting has been completed and before the first 35-mm copy is made? How do film labs or post-production firms operate and what about the ethics of consumption? How are subtitles added? What do you have to remember when editing different frame rates? What effects do changes to the cut have on the picture lock? And why are digital shoots per se not faster, cheaper and easier? Anne Urban will be illustrating the fundamentals of digital film work, looking at some crisis situations and their consequences and showing how film-makers can keep to budget by means of careful cost management.
