PROTAGONIST »IN SPACE IS THE PLACE« BY VERONIKA GERHARD

This short-film programme focuses on artistic film work that deals with the phenomenon of Dissolution in various ways – the dissolving of ideas, families, nation states, memories, cities, opinions or of history or histories. The films show how boundaries are crossed and shifted, and demonstrate that drawing borders is always arbitrary but never without underlying interests. A homogeneous nation with a homogeneous history does not and cannot exist, because ideas and people always move and change. The Dissolution programme is dedicated to films that show how different places and times are intertwined, and how history and histories continue to affect the present and the future. 1992, 1889, 2025, 1938, 2011, 1993, 1949 – from Thessaloniki via Dachau to Munich, from Birmingham, Alabama, via Saturn to Kreuzberg, from Belgium via the Congo to Austria, from Vietnam via the GDR to the FRG and back, from the US to East and West Berlin. The film-makers focus their attention on the individual people who are shaped by the great ideological narratives of their respective times, and who also assert themselves beyond these narratives, in the conflicting areas between individual and collective history.
