Rosalie and Léontine Go to the Théâtre shows us the audience at a vaudeville theatre. It is refreshing to see what a chaotic space the theatre was, so different to today when everyone is supposed to sit quietly. Rosalie and Leontine have a wonderful time, becoming so involved with the show that they create absolute anarchy, which is liberating for us viewers even today.

How is it possible that we don’t even know the name of the actor who played Léontine, let alone her life story? An internationally beloved »enfant terrible«, the film character Léontine Penouillard was a tomboy, prankster, miscreant and an anarchist. From 1910 to 1912, the French film company Pathé Frères produced around 24 episodes of the Léontine series, 15 of which still exist today (though several only in fragments). Nicknamed Titine in France and Betty in the US and Britain, she enjoyed global popularity but then vanished into thin air. Many of her films, however, have survived.
