»My work has three main characteristics. One is my interest in the relation between animals and humans. In my Animal Performances I am seen dancing in front of sheep, goats, horses, cows and stripping in front of monkeys. The spectator becomes a voyeur, watching the animals who are watching me. The spectators are deprived of their passive roles. Who is looking at whom and why? Who has the power over the gaze, the power over seeing?«

Die 1974 geborene Joanna Rytel lebt und arbeitet in Stockholm. Sie schloss 2004 ihr Studium an der Konstfack Stockholm ab. Sie hat eine komplexe Kunstpraxis entwickelt, die stets auf die drängendsten Fragen unserer Zeit nach Gender, Macht und Identität verweist. Sie nähert sich diesen mit großer Integrität, stellt das Persönliche in den Vordergrund und nutzt eine Form der Ansprache, die sie auch für Menschen außerhalb der üblichen Kunst- und Filmwelt zugänglich macht.
