Content:
How we film and how we look at others through the camera matters. Yet, it is equally important to understand how others look back at us. What happens if the camera is used as a mediating rather than an invisible apparatus? What kind of empowering strategies open up? The question of power mechanisms inherent in filmmaking are as old as cinema itself. In our time of blatant global upheaval these problems have become urgent again. The way in which films are made and which stories they tell – and how – have an immense influence on us. How can we challenge the hegemonic gaze of the cinema anew? This panel dicussion presents best-practice examples of an emancipated camera; a kind of filmmaking in which multiple viewpoints feed into the production of an image that also looks back.
