Wo der Wind so kalt weht

For this, her graduation piece, Janina Jung returned once again to the people of her home village – Emmerichenhain. Her theme is an amalgam of home, strangeness and alienation. »In the lovely Westerwald, where the wind blows so cold,« the Westerwalders like to sing. But things such as »heimat« are not always so straightforward in Germany. Ms Jung puts the same questions to all the villagers: young and old, newcomers and long-term residents, Germans and migrants, questions concerning the village community and how it is changing, nature, landscape, money, jobs, love and marriage, language, tradition and faith. And thus, with the aid of intelligent montage techniques, an inventory of provincial German life in 2013 gradually emerges. Full of funny as well as bitter moments, all underlined by that leitmotif of the strange, the fi lm reminds us of just how problematic it is: home.
