We Were No Desert

A traditional dance is freed of its conservative politics, creating a space for queer history/stories. This Super 8 film is a collaboration between filmmaker Agustina Comedi and artist duo Chiachio & Giannone. By altering the repetitive element of a familiar visual motif and reimagining the traditional Pericón dance, the film challenges conventional notions of nationhood – through its setting, the dancers’ costumes, their personal histories and their movements.
Agustina Comedi
Agustina Comedi is an Argentinian filmmaker and screenwriter who studied literature. Comedi’s short film Playback was shown in the 2020 Berlinale Shorts Competition and won the Teddy Award.
