The search for a lost identity, hidden in the woods of a deserted war zone. How is trauma transmitted from one generation to the next? Elian Mikkola sets out to find their grandmother’s house. But how do you approach places when nothing seems to exist any more? Film material is not just examined in this work, it is fragmented and superimposed. Change grows out of a feeling of powerlessness.
Elian Mikkola is of Finnish-Karelian descent and lives between Treaty 4, Regina and Montreal. Mikkola studied journalism and media production, and works with both analogue and digital images as well as hybrid forms. Mikkola thus explores themes such as memory, spatial dependencies and queer belonging. Mikkola’s films premiered at IFF Rotterdam 2020 and Hong Kong IFF 2021.
