Onyeka Igwe
William Sellers and the Colonial Film Unit developed a framework for colonial cinema, characterised by slow edits and minimal camera movement. Hundreds of films were created in accordance with this rule set. Igwe reassembles and animates sequences with dancers. Using text fade-ins, she engages in intimate dialogue with the people on the screen: »Did you want your whole body in shot?«, »Do you not want me to see your face?«
Onyeka Igwe
Onyeka Igwe is a British artist whose work challenges and deconstructs racist narratives within colonial archives. She uses the body, archives and narratives, both oral and textual, as a means of exposing overlooked histories. Her work has been exhibited globally, including at MoMA, the Venice Biennale and international film festivals. In September 2025, she will present a solo exhibition at the Tate Britain.
