Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami
In her internationally acclaimed documentary Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami tells the story of 19-year-old rapper Sonita. Sonita lives in Iran as an illegal migrant – without rights, regular school education or papers. But Sonita’s got talent: She is the first female rapper from Afghanistan telling her story, which is by no means the exception. She hopes to escape her family’s plans: they want to sell their daughter for 9.000 € to an unknown husband, enabling Sonita’s brother to marry. At this point, the film’s director has to decide: is it better to keep the position of a neutral observer or to intervene?

Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami studierte Film (BA) und Animation (MA) an der Kunstuniversität Teheran. Sie forschte über Animation im Dokumentarfilm und veröffentlichte ihre Ergebnisse in dem Buch »Animated Documentary, a New Way to Express«. In ihren Dokumentarfilmen liegt der Fokus auf Menschen am Rande der Gesellschaft. Sie nutzt hybride Formen und überschreitet so bewusst die Grenzen des konventionellen Dokumentarfilms. Darüber hinaus liegt ihr künstlerisches Interesse in der Außenseiterkunst, Dramatherapie und experimentelle Animation. Ihr Dokumentarfilm Sonita lief auf zahlreichen Filmfestivals und gewann u. a. den Großen Preis der Jury und den Publikumspreis auf dem Sundance Film Festival 2016.
