Sitting right in front of the camera, Valie Export motionlessly cuts into the cuticles around her fingernails with a knife. The opened flesh and the blood dripping into a milk bowl produce symbolic images. Export comments on what is happening in the film: »The drama of human self-expression is played out in the slices of cut-off skin. […] My external side shows my inside, by me moving inwards, the inside turns outwards, gapes outwards – a psychic wound.«

Valie Export

Valie Export (*1940) studied at the school of arts and crafts in Linz and at a college for industrial textile design. The artist, involved in the Vienna Actionists circle, was co-founder of the Austrian Filmmakers Cooperative (now: filmcoop Austria) and of Film Women International. Export has lectured at Berlin University of the Arts and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has also conceived and organised international art exhibitions and film programmes. Her films are shown worldwide.
