Two young women in Nairobi fight for their shared future despite all the discrimination.

The film is based on the short story “Jambula Tree” by Ugandan author Monica Arac de Nyeko. Kena and Ziki are the daughters of two rival local politicians and fall in love with each other. Same-sex love is forbidden in their country, so they keep their relationship a secret. Even though their love ultimately fails because of social norms, the film remains positive throughout. Rafiki is the first Kenyan film to be invited to the Cannes International Film Festival.
