Playing with Fire: An Ecosexual Emergency
Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle
Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens take us on an irresistibly humorous journey into their eco-sexual world of human/non-human collaborations and show us how the climate crisis should be considered in conjunction with social justice and the fight against racism and transphobia. Amusingly narrated by Albert, the mythical white peacock of Boulder Creek, and set in the context of the fires in Northern California in 2020, they give us insights into their experiences with fire: the fire in their hometown of Boulder Creek and the cremation of Annie Sprinkle’s mother’s body are juxtaposed with an eco-sexual encounter in a burnt forest and a ceremonial wedding with fire in the redwoods. Together with other artists (including Guillermo Gómez-Peña), indigenous elders and formerly incarcerated firefighters, they explore the ambivalence of fire, which is not only responsible for the destruction of nature and the habitats of humans and animals, but also represents an important element of nature. Playing with Fire: An Ecosexual Emergency is the last film in this pair’s trilogy of queer environmental documentaries and, as they themselves say, »a powerful portrait of queer resilience in the face of a world in flames«.
