On the Mat Outside My Door

An oversized rat moves into a man’s house. It whistles along to the radio, squats in the fridge, splashes in the bathtub – intrusive, uninvited, impossible to ignore. At first, the man is annoyed, but when the rat disappears, he feels an unexpected sense of emptiness. Based on the children’s book by Nadia Budde, this animated film uses rhyming voice-overs and sharp wit to explore the familiar truth that we often only learn to appreciate things when they are gone.

Antje Heyn
Antje Heyn is a Berlin-based director and illustrator. She studied visual communication at weissensee school of art and design berlin, specialising in animation and illustration. Her work is inspired by observations of everyday urban life and culture as well as nature and animals. She teaches animation at universities and art academies and runs the animation film studio Protoplanet.
