Meanwhile
Catherine Gund
At the beginning of the film, »meanwhile: ›in the intervening period of time (sequential), at the same time (simultaneous)‹«, appears in white letters against a black background. Meanwhile combines the form of a poem with that of a documentary film, resulting in a docu-poem in six verses. It is a meditation on the impact of white supremacy on human relationships and life in the US, and it asks how racism and resistance movements shape shared experiences. By interweaving art, dance, footage from private and public archives and spoken poetry, viewers are drawn into an immersive film experience. They are invited to follow their breath and move between the events that take place in the meanwhile, or simultaneously. Policies of breathing call for resistance: How can we keep on breathing – despite the crises, the oppression, the racism and its enduring legacy? How can individuals express themselves artistically and remain resolute? The lyrical narratives, written and spoken by award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson, and the powerful music and soundscapes of Meshell Ndegeocello guide us through the film, the result of a collaboration between Catherine Gund, Woodson and Ndegeocello. Constant and rhythmic, like a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
