Marcus Fisher’s Wake
The mock documentary Marcus Fisher’s Wake shows some of the public interventions conducted by Oreet Ashery’s alter ego, Orthodox Jew Marcus Fisher. Ashery combines documentary material produced in Berlin, Tel Aviv and London, with home videos and anonymous photographic stills. The film thus charts the fictional life of the character Marcus Fisher, from his childhood to his early death.
Born in 1966 in Jerusalem, Ashery studied art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and Sheffield Hallam University. The work of the London-based artist is exhibited at internationally renowned galleries and museums and has received numerous prestigious prizes. Ashery’s work explores such subjects as Judaism, ethnicity, gender and the Arab and Muslim world.
