The acting and operetta stars Fritzi Massary and Joseph Giampietro sing the song »Komm du kleines Kohlenmädchen« (»Come little coal girl«) as a duet in front of a painted stage façade with a cityscape view. Visible on the dress of the »charming little plebeian« is the lettering »Hibernia« and the hammer-and-iron mining signet on a black ground. At the start of the 20th century, sound motion pictures made using a combination of film and gramophone were the attraction of early film programmes. (BS)

Fritzi Massary (Artist)
Die Sängerin und Schauspielerin Fritzi Massary wurde 1882 als Friederika Massaryk in Wien geboren. Von Linz wechselte sie nach Berlin, wo sie nach Auftritten in Tonbildern und Stummfilmen am Metropol-Theater eine glänzende Karriere als Revue- und Operettenstar entwickelte. Sie brillierte in allen großen Rollen ihres Fachs und avancierte nebenbei zur Modeikone ihrer Zeit. Nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten musste die jüdische Künstlerin Deutschland verlassen und ging über Großbritannien nach Los Angeles, wo sie bis zu ihrem Tode 1969 lebte.
