The acting and operetta stars Fritzi Massary and Joseph Giampietro sing the song »Komm du kleines Kohlenmädchen« (»Come little coal girl«) as a duet in front of a painted stage façade with a cityscape view. Visible on the dress of the »charming little plebeian« is the lettering »Hibernia« and the hammer-and-iron mining signet on a black ground. At the start of the 20th century, sound motion pictures made using a combination of film and gramophone were the attraction of early film programmes. (BS)

Fritzi Massary (Artist)

The singer and actress Fritzi Massary was born Friederika Massaryk in 1882 in Vienna. From Linz she moved to Berlin where, after appearing in sound pictures and silent films, she developed a brilliant career as a revue and operetta star at the Metropol Theater. She performed brilliantly in all the great roles of her field, also becoming a fashion icon of her time. After the National Socialists took power in Germany, the Jewish artist had to leave the country and travelled via Great Britain to Los Angeles, where she lived until her death in 1969.
