Con el viento
Facing the Wind
Meritxell Colell Aparicio
Forty-seven year-old Mónica has been living and working in Buenos Aires as a dancer for 20 years when she receives the news that her father is dying back in Spain. By the time she arrives home, he has already passed away. Now alone, her mother wants to sell the family home. Mónica decides to stay.
In her debut feature film with its cast of amateur actors, Meritxell Colell Aparicio sensitively portrays the reunion of a family that copes without the need for many words – if there has to be interaction, it occurs on another level. Con el viento appropriates these forms of communication, focusing on the emotional power of gestures and signs, bodies and images, and also assigns a silent role to the rugged North Spanish landscape.
»It is a tender film about silence and isolation that speaks of family and the difficulties of country life in one of the most unknown regions of Spain. The dry and vast landscape of Castilla echoes the emotions of the characters. Dance is the place where Mónica always finds a physical and sensitive expression of her inner transformations. This builds the cinematographic strength of the film.«
