The Ground Beneath my Feet

The Ground Beneath my Feet

Marie Kreutzer

»Our capitalist society would no longer function if we didn’t feel this constant need to compare ourselves and as a result feel inferior, if we didn’t believe we have to accomplish more, create more, have more.«
– Marie Kreutzer

Lola is an extremely disciplined, highly organised and career-conscious business consultant in her thirties. Constantly jet-setting between the companies she optimises and restructures, she puts in 100-hour weeks and works out at 4.30 in the morning − five times a week. Her tasteful apartment in Vienna serves mainly as a mailbox and wardrobe. This lifestyle is rounded off by fancy dinners with clients and a secret affair with her boss. She keeps quiet about the rest of her personal life. Lola, who lost both her parents when she was young, is the only caregiver of her older sister Conny, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Conny is overwhelmed by everyday life and spends most of her time in a psychiatric clinic. After attempting suicide, Conny calls on her sister to look after her. Lola tries to find a system that will help her care for her sister without getting too involved herself. But Conny undermines this as intelligently as she does manipulatively − and Lola’s organised life starts to crumble.
