Bruderland ist abgebrannt
Bruderland ist abgebrannt (Brotherland has burnt down) is dedicated to the fate of Vietnamese contract workers in the GDR whose government-arranged contracts were rendered invalid with the fall of the Berlin Wall. The film was made in 1991, when a certain pogrom mood was present in Berlin’s streets, and is one of the rare testimonies of the time that closely examines everyday racism and structural exclusion.
Angelika Nguyen studied film dramaturgy, literary theory, film history and film theory, and works as a speaker and author for newspapers, magazines, and online portals. In 2011, her essay Mutter, wie weit ist Vietnam? (Mother, how far is Vietnam?) appeared, in which she describes her childhood as the daughter of a German mother and a Vietnamese father in the GDR.
