Imagine Afghanistan. Women Filmmakers and Their Vision

IFFF Dortmund+Köln Imagine Afghanistan

10th discussion organised by the IFFF Dortmund+Köln on gender equity and the status of women* in the film industry

A new generation of young Afghan film directors has celebrated international success in recent years, for instance the feature The Orphanage by Shahrbanoo Sadat or the Sundance award winning documentary Sonita by Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami. The terrorist takeover by the Taliban in August 2021 introduced a radical turning point for the film industry.

This panel discussion focuses on outstanding women directors’ films about Afghanistan. Three internationally celebrated filmmakers will discuss the way in which they produced empowering stories beyond the grand narratives of turmoil and taboo. They will talk about the obstacles and opportunities they encountered while making films in their country.

Join the discussion about female filmmaking in Afghanistan in the past, present and future!
