30 June: »Copa 71« at Kölner Kino Nächte

We are part of the 16th Kölner Kino Nächte and are excited to present Copa 71, the winning film of this year’s Audience Award.

COPA 71
Director: Rachel Ramsay, James Erskine
GB 2023, Documentary, 91′, OmU

Copa 71 is a captivating documentary film about the first international women’s football tournament, which took place in Mexico City in 1971. With 100,000 spectators in the two largest stadiums in Mexico, the tournament was a huge success, but it was never recognised by FIFA. What could have been a starting signal for women’s football worldwide was not supported after the Copa. A global expansion and acceptance of women’s football was prevented across countries.

The film presents impressive archive footage of the tournament as well as current interviews with the players of the time. Copa 71 rewrites football history.
