Agnès Varda
In the summer of 1968, the Black Panthers held a series of rallies in Oakland, California, to draw attention to the trial of one of their leaders, Huey Newton, and to shake up American society, a mission they unequivocally achieved. Using a 16 mm camera, Varda captured scenes of resistance against police brutality, conducted interviews and demonstrated solidarity with the revolutionary principles and radical demands of the Black Panthers.

Agnès Varda gründete 1954 ihre eigene Produktionsfirma Ciné Tamaris. Ihr erster Kurzfilm La Pointe Courte gilt heute als erster Beitrag der Nouvelle Vague. Nach einem Gesamtwerk von über 40 Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen experimentierte Varda in den letzten Jahren mit Foto- und Videoinstallationen, die in Museen ausgestellt wurden. In ihrem weltweit gezeigten, prämierten und hoch angesehenen Œuvre war sie stets auf der Suche nach der »Cinécriture« – dem »Schreiben« mit der Kamera. Varda starb 2019 mit 90 Jahren in Paris.
