After a serious illness, the ten-year-old Mike is finally discharged and allowed back home. But when his mother shows up at the hospital to collect him, she is, as so often, drunk. The Youth Welfare Office is called in: Mike may only return to his mother if she can care for him adequately.
Mike knows that she drinks too much but no way does he want to be placed with foster parents. After all, he is old enough to take care of himself. So he and his room-mate Vincent, who he is slowly beginning to make friends with, devise a plan that will thwart the Youth Welfare Office. But the things go totally wrong. When finally threatened with accommodation in a children’s home, Mike sees no other way out and absconds. Except no one is at home, because his mother is now on an alcohol detox programme and trying to get her problems under control. When the boy is found again, he has to return to the hospital. But a happy ending is in sight.

Maria Peters hat einen Bachelor in Jura und graduierte 1983 an der Dutch Film Academy mit ihrem Debüt Alle vogels vliegen, das bei NOSTV ausgestrahlt wurde. Zwischen 1983 und 1987 arbeitete sie unter anderem als Redakteurin und Regieassistentin für mehrere Spielfilmproduktionen. 1987 gründete sie mit Dave Schram und Hans Pos die Produktionsfirma Shooting Star Filmcompany, die 1993 den Stijn Coninx Film Daens produzierte, der einen Academy Award für den besten fremdsprachigen Film gewann. Maria Peters führte bereits bei 14 Filmen Regie und erhielt für De Tasjedief einen Bären auf den Internationalen Filmfestspielen Berlin. Ihr Familienfilm Kruimeltje erzielte mit 1,3 Mio. Zuschauern in den Niederlanden einen Publikumsrekord. 2012 wurde ihr Film Sonny Boy als niederländischer Beitrag für den Academy Award (Oscar) vorgeschlagen.
