With her feature film Palestine 36 Jacir has created a passionate, visually stunning historical epic about the 1936 Arab Revolt, which serves as a cinematic tribute to this defining moment in her country’s history.
The latest film by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, and Palestine’s official Oscar entry, celebrated its acclaimed world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was honoured with a 20-minute standing ovation.
Guest: Professor Dr. Abed Shokry
Professor Dr. Abed Shokry comes from a large Palestinian family in Gaza. After studying and earning his doctorate in Germany, he returned to Gaza and taught industrial engineering at the Islamic University in Gaza. Abed Shokry has five children and lived in Gaza during the war until, after much effort, he finally managed to leave, first for Egypt and then for Germany.
What does the historical portrayal of Palestine in Jacir’s film have to do with us today? How do the media change our perception of Palestine? What is the reality for the people of Palestine? We will discuss these and other questions with Professor Shokry.

People with and without an international history, women with refugee experience, their families and anyone interested in excellent, often rarely shown international films directed by women are warmly invited to the programme.
