5 September: »Djelem Djelem Festival« Filmdiscussion Unbroken – The Song of Survivors
The Munich-based association RomAnity e.V. is producing an extraordinary film project, an anime musical about the persecution of the Sinti and Roma. Together with the Dortmund-based Romano Than e.V., we are presenting this pioneering work.
Atiđe (project manager, Unbroken) will give an introduction to the work using selected film clips and images.
This will be followed by a discussion between Atiđe (project manager, Unbroken), Zejhun Demirov (protagonist, Unbroken) and Susey Wendy (protagonist, Unbroken). The discussion will be moderated by Maxa Zoller (artistic director, IFFF).
Unbroken tells five moving life stories:
Rukeli Trollmann – boxing champion and rebel
Else Baker – a child in Auschwitz
Otto Rosenberg – Holocaust survivor and civil rights activist for the Sinti and Roma
Walter Winter – a contemporary witness of the Porajmos and chronicler of the Sinti persecution
Noncia Markowska – a lifesaver with the courage to take risks
What if memory doesn’t gather dust in archives, but comes alive on screen?
What if Sinti and Roma tell their own stories – powerfully, creatively, and unmistakably?
But Unbroken is more than just a film—it’s part of a larger educational project (funded by the EVZ Foundation). The goal is to finally make the topic of the Holocaust against Sinti and Roma accessible to teachers. The accompanying learning platform, with its interactive and narrative design, feels more like a video game than a classroom setting. Both the film and the learning platform can be used directly in the classroom without any prior knowledge.
5th September | 6-8 pm (Admission from 5 pm) | Studio B (Stadt- und Landesbibliothek Dortmund), Max-von-der-Grün-Platz 1-3, 44137 Dortmund
In cooperation with Djelem Djelem Festival
Atiđe (Project manager Unbroken)
Atiđe is 30 years old, a Romani woman from Bavaria, and works as a project manager. She knows both the silence of remaining silent and the power of making things visible. Her origins were kept secret in her family for a long time – even from her until she was a teenager. As a young adult, she began to ask questions and search for answers. Through exchanges with other members of the minority, an internship at Zentralrat and her involvement in the Baden-Württemberg regional association, she found the courage to be publicly Romani. Today, she no longer wants to be silent. She belongs to a young generation of activists who are taking control of the narrative themselves – with a focus on education, economics and media
