Joséphine Baker Watches Herself
Terri Francis
Paris, Folies Bergère, 1926: Josephine Baker performs her iconic banana dance on stage, surrounded by stereotypical props. In later years, as an older woman, she reflects on her career as a revue and film star in an interview. The editing reframes Baker as a thinking spectator of her own work. »Neither a single image nor a static representation, Baker is rather a dazzling many-ness, a structure of spectacles, formed from multiple media« (Terri Francis).
