Off screen: a sigh, an utterance (»Now then … today’s history«). On screen: a rustling noise. Right from the start, Gabriele Mathes reveals her intention of sounding out the viability of the term that forms the film’s title. For the history of today refers to an event that occurred 25 years previously: the violent and destructive end of a relationship and a subsequent new beginning. Traces of the
event were captured back then, the year 1987, on video. In Flaschenpost (Message in a Bottle), Ms Mathes gets to work on decoding the messages that these recordings hold.

Gabriele Mathes

Gabriele Mathes first studied English, philosophy and art history. In 1985, though, she turned her attentions to film direction at the University of Music & Performing Arts, Vienna. Since 2006, she has run the wienervideo&filmtage, a video and film festival for children and young adults. Also in 2006, her film Eine million Kredit ist normal, sagt mein Grossvater won the Diagonale Film Festival Award for Innovative Cinema as well as the New Visions Award at the CPH:DOX in Copenhagen.
