Off screen: a sigh, an utterance (»Now then … today’s history«). On screen: a rustling noise. Right from the start, Gabriele Mathes reveals her intention of sounding out the viability of the term that forms the film’s title. For the history of today refers to an event that occurred 25 years previously: the violent and destructive end of a relationship and a subsequent new beginning. Traces of the
event were captured back then, the year 1987, on video. In Flaschenpost (Message in a Bottle), Ms Mathes gets to work on decoding the messages that these recordings hold.

Gabriele Mathes
Gabriele Mathes studierte zunächst Anglistik, Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte und ab 1985 Regie an der Wiener Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst. Seit 2006 leitet sie die wienervideo&filmtage, ein Filmfestival für Kinder und Jugendliche. Für ihren autobiografischen Film Eine million Kredit ist normal, sagt mein Großvater erhielt sie 2006 den Preis für innovatives Kino bei der Diagonale sowie den New Visions Award bei CPH:DOX in Kopenhagen.
