As a growing number of weird deaths shatter the idyll of a small town on the American coast, a seriously injured eyewitness tells of bloodcurdling monsters that emerge from the sea: half-fish and half-human. Biologist Dr Susan Drake takes on the monsters whose main object is to attack and rape women as a means of propagating their species.
Humanoids from the Deep is a science-runs-amok movie that hovers between science fiction and horror trash, reminiscent of the low budget monster films that Roger Corman started to produce back in the 1950s. Because Barbara Peeters refused to shoot the rape scenes that Corman was demanding, she was replaced by Jimmy T. Murakami who came up with the required material. Ms Peeters then tried to get her name removed from the film’s credits, albeit unsuccessfully.

Barbara Peeters wuchs in Iowa auf und studierte Theater, bevor sie zum Film kam. Sie war die erste Frau, die 1971 mit Bury Me an Angel einen Biker-Film vorlegte. Mit Stephanie Rothman zusammen war sie auch eine der beiden Frauen, die in den 1970er Jahren für Roger Cormans Studio New World Pictures arbeitete. Ihr Debüt gab sie als Koautorin und Koregisseurin für The Dark Side of Tomorrow, der ein lesbisches Coming-Out thematisierte. 1980 verließ sie New World Pictures und führte in den kommenden zehn Jahren Regie bei Fernsehfilmen und -serien, darunter bei Renegades, Remington Steele oder Falcon Crest. In den 1990er Jahren etablierte Peeters ihre eigene Firma Silver Foxx Films. 2008 zog sie nach Oregon und konzentrierte sich in ihrer Arbeit hauptsächlich auf Werbefilme und Dokumentationen.
