A crane’s wings, snow-covered mountain peaks, a spectral army: Hanna Noh’s 3D graphic animation on the DMZ border area between North and South Korea has a strongly immersive, meditative character that is hard to resist. The symbolic red-crowned crane, whose wings carry us through the mountains, becomes a metaphorical symbol of peace in a shamanic dance ritual. The shadowy figures in the pale white and grey images lend the video a ghostly quality, as if the artist is deliberately trying to avoid depicting the DMZ realistically. In fact, the poetic and theoretical text of this video raises questions about how this region can be represented and leaves the viewer realising that a sign system is also always a spiritual act. Hanna Noh thus opens up an approach to art that while not lost in this country, is pretty rare in the Western world.

Hanna Noh is this year’s winner of the Shoot – KHM & IFFF Dortmund+Köln Award for Female Artists of the KHM. The filmic work will be shown as part of the new program Spot on, NRW!
